GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS (please read carefully)

APCN accepts analytical reviews of books and films relevant in any way to African conflict or peace. Given our broad view of these subjects, a wide variety of titles are viable, but reviewers must make explicit the peace/conflict implications.
We accept unsolicited submissions, and prospective reviewers may also request items from our “Titles Available for Review” list (Please refer here).
Title requests must include name, mailing address, institutional affiliation, job title, and/or explanation of reviewer’s qualifications. If you receive a book from APCN, your completed review must be returned within 120 days of its receipt.

ADDITIONALGUIDELINES (please read carefully)

  • Reviews may be from one to five double-spaced pages in length, and they should follow APCN’s style guidelines.

  • Submissions are reviewed to ensure quality and suitability.

  • Reviews should be well written, concise, and thematically relevant. Please avoid ad hominem critiques. Reviews may, however, be lively, and provocative (when justifiable). The primary goal is for reviews to be useful to persons in the field, especially those who cannot easily access the book.
  • Include the following elements:

1. Description of the sources used by the author

2. An assessment of how well the book accomplishes the authors stated goals

3. The potential audience for the book.

  • Submissions must be formatted according to the Chicago style guidelines. For specific instructions click here (PDF)
  • It is the authors’ responsibility to ensure that papers meet the formatting and style requirements and that all usage of others' ideas and materials is appropriately referenced. Submissions that do not meet the requirements will not be published. Do not submit materials that do not conform to the requirements or have not been carefully edited and checked for errors.
  • Reviews must be double-spaced, aligned left, and with 1-inch margins.
  • Please minimize:

1. Notes, citations, and references

2. The use of italics, underlining, and bold font styles (try to avoid any such text styles).

  • Thematic reviews are generally preferable to chapter-by-chapter summaries.
  • Please include all bibliographical information at the beginning of the review.

Distributed by African Books Collective Ltd., Unit 13 Kings Meadow, Ferry Hinksey Rd., Oxford OX2 0DP. vi + 154 pp. Photographs. Bibliography. Index. $18.00. Paper.

  • At the end of the review, please note your name, your institutional affiliation, and postal and email addresses.
  • Reviews must be submitted by email, and the message should include the main part of the reviewed work’s title and the reviewer’s last name, and whether it is a book or film review.
  • The review itself must be attached to the email in MS word (.doc) or rich text (.rtf) format, with no commenting and editing restrictions.
